Swein
Before his later encounters with Ealdorman Leofwine, Swein Forkbeard must first establish himself as a ruler in Denmark. Conflict with his father and the need to secure his own following force Swein to prove his authority through warfare, alliance and successful raiding.
The story follows the early years of his kingship, including attacks on England and the rivalry with Olaf Tryggvason of Norway. Swein’s ambitions carry him into the shifting political world of the late tenth-century North Sea, where control depends on fleets, personal loyalty and the ability to exploit weakness in neighbouring kingdoms. The narrative culminates around the Battle of Svolder in 999, placing Swein’s rise within the wider Scandinavian contest that precedes his later campaigns in England and the creation of a Danish empire across the North Sea.
