Eric Bloodaxe in York

Eric Bloodaxe, a former king of Norway, twice held power at York during the last years of independent Scandinavian rule in Northumbria. His position depended on alliances among Norse settlers, local magnates and rival claimants.
York’s politics connected Ireland, Norway, Denmark and the English kingdoms. Eric’s wife Gunnhild and their family became important figures in later Norse tradition, while English kings sought to end the city’s separate kingship.
