Allied Invasion of Sicily
1943
The Allied invasion of Sicily began in July 1943 and brought British, Canadian and American forces onto Axis-held territory in the central Mediterranean. Airborne, amphibious and commando operations supported the advance across the island.
The campaign mattered because it opened the way to mainland Italy and contributed to Mussolini’s fall. It also showed the logistical and tactical complexity of attacking defended Mediterranean coastlines.
