Iron Kingdom

by Christopher Clark

First published 2006

4.4(1,140)

Iron Kingdom follows Brandenburg-Prussia from its scattered seventeenth-century territories through war, dynastic consolidation and administrative reform. It traces the state’s recovery from the Thirty Years’ War, the growth of its army and bureaucracy, and the expansion achieved under rulers including Frederick William I and Frederick the Great.

The narrative continues through defeat by Napoleon, nineteenth-century reform and Bismarck’s wars of German unification. Clark then examines Prussia’s position inside the German Empire, its experience of the First World War, Weimar instability and Nazi rule, ending with the Allied abolition of the Prussian state in 1947. The book presents Prussia as a changing political society rather than a simple march towards militarism.
