Gerald War Bow has earned a place in Edward I’s service, but life on the Welsh border gives him little chance to enjoy the security that position promises. When Prince Llywelyn refuses to accept Edward’s demands, Gerald is sent across the Marches as a royal envoy, charged with testing alliances and pressing the Welsh ruler toward submission.

Diplomacy fails, and Edward turns increasingly to military conquest, castle building and the seizure of territory. Gerald is drawn into a campaign in which old border loyalties become unreliable and service to the crown places him against men who may once have been neighbours or allies. The novel follows the escalation from negotiation to open war as Edward seeks to impose English authority over Wales.
