Benito Mussolini

1883–1945

Benito Mussolini was the founder of Italian Fascism and dictator of Italy from 1922 until his fall in 1943. His regime suppressed opposition, pursued imperial expansion, allied with Nazi Germany, and brought Italy into the Second World War with catastrophic consequences.

In Christopher Nicole’s The Sword and the Scalpel, in these sun-baked deserts, serving with the army of Hailie Selassie against the ambitions of Benito Mussolini, he gains first-hand knowledge of the horrors of war. In James Holland’s The Devil’s Pact, the fall of Mussolini makes every alliance unstable. Other novels featuring Benito Mussolini include Robert Harris’s Munich, Wilbur Smith’s Cry Wolf, Christopher Nicole’s Stop Rommel!, Christopher Nicole’s The Traitor Within, and John Rhodes’s A Slender Thread.

In non-fiction, Benito Mussolini is discussed in James Holland’s Sicily ’43, James Holland’s The War in the West: A New History, Volume 1, James Holland’s Fortress Malta, James Holland’s Italy’s Sorrow, and James Holland’s The War in the West: A New History, Volume 2. In James Holland’s Sicily ’43, Holland follows soldiers and civilians through the campaign to Messina and the political fall of Mussolini.
