Trajan

53–117

Trajan was Roman emperor from AD 98 to 117 and presided over the empire at its greatest territorial extent. His conquest of Dacia, campaigns in the east and reputation as an ideal ruler made him one of the most celebrated emperors in Roman memory.

In Griff Hosker’s The Last Frontier, it is 117 A. D. and the Emperor Trajan is dead. In Griff Hosker’s Trajan’s Hunters, at the same time Livius and his comrades are sent by the Emperor Trajan on a secret mission to recover the gold stolen from Britannia and return his brother for punishment. Other novels featuring Trajan include Adrian Goldsworthy’s Vindolanda, Adrian Goldsworthy’s The Fort, Griff Hosker’s The Sword of Cartimandua, Adrian Goldsworthy’s The Encircling Sea, and Adrian Goldsworthy’s Brigantia.

In non-fiction, Trajan is discussed in Adrian Goldsworthy’s In the Name of Rome, Pliny the Younger’s The Letters of Pliny the Younger, and Adrian Goldsworthy’s Pax Romana. In Adrian Goldsworthy’s In the Name of Rome, it considers how generals such as Scipio Africanus, Caesar, Trajan and others used discipline, logistics, diplomacy and political ambition to win campaigns.
