Trajan’s Parthian War

Trajan’s eastern campaign began after conflict over Armenia and expanded into a much wider invasion of territories associated with Parthian power. Roman armies advanced through Armenia and Mesopotamia, taking major cities and briefly extending imperial claims farther east than before.

The gains proved difficult to hold. Revolts, distance, supply problems and Trajan’s death in 117 led Hadrian to abandon much of the eastern expansion. The war exposed both the reach and the limits of Roman offensive power.

The City places Ferox at a siege on the eastern frontier while Hadrian’s ambitions remain politically uncertain. The context works for fiction about siege warfare, corruption, intelligence, commanders on distant fronts and the moment when a successful empire risks overextension.
