Caesar’s Soldier
First published 2023
Rome and the eastern Mediterranean, 63–50 BCE. The young Mark Antony sees his stepfather Lentulus Sura executed for involvement in Catiline’s conspiracy, a family loss that fixes his hostility towards Cicero and senatorial justice. Years of debt and disorder are followed by military service under Aulus Gabinius.
Campaigns in Judaea and the restoration of Ptolemy XII in Egypt teach Antony cavalry command and the value of powerful patrons. He then joins Julius Caesar in Gaul, beginning the alliance that will carry him from provincial warfare into the final political struggles of the Republic.
