Publius Cornelius Lentulus Sura was a former consul who joined Catiline’s conspiracy after being expelled from the Senate. Cicero obtained evidence of his involvement, and Lentulus was executed without trial in December 63 BCE together with other conspirators. He had married Julia, making him the stepfather of the young Mark Antony.
Caesar’s Soldier uses Lentulus’s fall as a defining trauma in Antony’s youth. The execution turns the constitutional crisis of 63 BCE into a family catastrophe and helps explain the fictionalised Antony’s hostility towards Cicero and the senatorial establishment.
