Arthur’s truce with Constantine appears to have secured Britain from Roman invasion, and his kingdom has found an uneasy accommodation between pagan and Christian communities. The settlement begins to collapse when a severe pestilence kills thousands, ruins harvests and leaves the army without enough men to defend the borders.
A rival warlord uses the crisis to gather supporters among communities that distrust Arthur’s rule. The emperor must rebuild military strength without destroying the cooperation on which his authority depends. Peace proves more difficult to preserve than victory, because disease and hunger create enemies that cannot be defeated in a single battle.
