English Renaissance
1485–1603 CE
The English Renaissance developed across the late Tudor and early Stuart years. It included the work of Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser, Jonson and many lesser-known writers, as well as court masques, printed books and humanist education. London’s growth and the theatre economy gave the period a distinctive literary energy.
Its importance lies in the connection between culture and power. Plays, poems and entertainments reflected monarchy, religion, empire, social ambition and anxiety about disorder. The stage became a place where politics and imagination could meet indirectly.
Elizabethan and Jacobean literary settings appear in Rory Clements’s John Shakespeare series, S. J. Parris’s Giordano Bruno novels, Anthony Burgess’s Nothing Like the Sun and many Shakespeare-centred mysteries. The setting suits playwrights, spies, actors, printers, patrons and women navigating a male literary world.
