Martin Frobisher was an English seafarer, privateer and explorer of the Elizabethan period. His voyages in search of a Northwest Passage and his service against the Spanish Armada placed him in the maritime expansion of Tudor England.
Martin Frobisher was born in Altofts and died in Plymouth. Frobisher led three Arctic voyages in the 1570s, bringing back ore mistakenly believed to contain gold; he later served as a naval commander against Spain and died in 1594 after being wounded during an attack on a Spanish-held fort.
