Acre, July 1191. Alan Dale is recovering from battle wounds in a hospital serving the crusading army when he meets Hanno, a brutal Bavarian man-at-arms whose hostility makes companionship appear impossible. Both men are weakened, isolated and dependent on institutions strained by siege and disease.
A threat inside the hospital forces Alan and Hanno to judge one another by action rather than origin or temperament. The short story explains the beginning of a relationship that becomes important to Robin Hood’s company during the return from the Holy Land and the later conflicts of the series.
