In 1180, the young Robin Odo and his formidable companion Little John are not yet the leaders of a famous outlaw company. They attempt an early robbery in Sherwood and discover that violence, planning and authority are harder to control than the stories told about successful bandits suggest.
The short story presents the beginnings of the partnership that will later dominate Alan Dale’s life. Robin’s appetite for risk and John’s strength are already evident, but neither man possesses the network, discipline or reputation that will make the band powerful. The episode serves as the chronological opening of the Outlaw Chronicles.
