Historical person

Ulysses S. Grant

born 1946

Ulysses S. Grant was the Union general who became the eighteenth president of the United States. He led campaigns at Vicksburg and Chattanooga, accepted Lee’s surrender at Appomattox and later used federal power to defend Reconstruction governments and suppress the Ku Klux Klan.

In Jeff Shaara’s A Blaze of Glory, Albert Sidney Johnston gathers an army at Corinth and plans to strike Ulysses S. Grant near Pittsburg Landing before Don Carlos Buell can reinforce him. In Jeff Shaara’s The Last Full Measure, in 1864, Abraham Lincoln gives Ulysses S. Grant authority over the Union armies, and Grant begins a campaign that refuses to release pressure after each battle. Other novels featuring Ulysses S. Grant include David Healey’s Sharpshooter, Jeff Shaara’s Gone for Soldiers, John Jakes’s North and South, Griff Hosker’s Rebel Raiders, and John Jakes’s The Titans.
