Adrian Goldsworthy

1969

Adrian Goldsworthy combines specialist military history with historical fiction set in Roman Britain and the wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France.

Adrian Goldsworthy was born in 1969 and studied ancient and modern history at the University of Oxford, where he completed a doctorate on the Roman army. He has taught at several universities and built a reputation as a historian able to explain military institutions, political competition and command decisions to a broad readership. His nonfiction includes studies of the Roman army, the Punic Wars, Julius Caesar, Augustus and the long relationship between Rome and Persia.

Alongside his historical work, Goldsworthy writes two substantial strands of fiction. The Vindolanda novels follow the soldier Flavius Ferox through frontier service, tribal conflict and imperial intrigue in Roman Britain, using forts, patrols and local alliances to show how authority operated far from Rome. His Napoleonic-era novels, beginning with True Soldier Gentlemen, follow British officers and soldiers during the wars with France and pay close attention to drill, morale and battlefield command. Across both settings, Goldsworthy’s academic knowledge supports clear, practical storytelling. He is particularly valuable to readers interested in the Roman military, Hadrian’s Wall and the operational realities of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century warfare.
