Book
King
In 1192, Richard I leaves the Holy Land after agreeing peace with Saladin, but the journey home places him in hostile territory. Travelling with Ferdia, he survives shipwreck and attempts to cross Europe in disguise before Leopold of Austria captures him and hands him to Emperor Henry VI.
While Richard is imprisoned and an enormous ransom is demanded, Eleanor of Aquitaine works to preserve his kingdom. John seeks the crown and Philip II attacks Richard’s lands in France. Ferdia becomes caught in the efforts to protect the captive king and secure his release. Once Richard returns, he must reassert his authority in England and wage war against Philip to recover the castles and territories lost during his absence.
