Second Intermediate Period of Egypt

c. 1650–1550 BCE

The Second Intermediate Period followed the Middle Kingdom and saw Egypt divided between regional powers. Hyksos rulers based in the eastern Delta controlled much of the north, while Egyptian dynasties ruled from Thebes in the south. The period combined trade, cultural exchange, rivalry and recurring military pressure rather than a simple foreign occupation of the whole country.

Its importance lies in the way division reshaped Egyptian kingship and warfare. The Theban rulers who resisted the Hyksos developed the political and military momentum that led into the New Kingdom. The later memory of reunification helped support a more assertive image of pharaonic power.

Pauline Gedge’s Lord of the Two Lands trilogy uses this divided Egypt as its central world. The setting is useful for fiction about royal households, divided legitimacy, Delta strongholds, Theban resistance, chariot warfare and the transition from regional survival to imperial renewal.
