Hyksos Rule in Egypt

The Hyksos established power in the eastern Nile Delta, ruling from Avaris and controlling northern Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period. Their presence brought Levantine connections, new military technologies and a political division between north and south. Egyptian sources later remembered them through the hostile language of foreign rule and expulsion.

This phase mattered because it forced Theban rulers to define themselves against a powerful rival inside Egypt. The conflict was dynastic, military and ideological: control of the Two Lands became inseparable from the question of who could claim legitimate kingship.

In historical fiction, Hyksos Egypt provides a strong setting for court politics, occupation, border warfare and cultural friction. The Lord of the Two Lands novels use the Hyksos threat as the pressure under which the Theban royal family begins the war of reunification.
