Ancient Egypt after the death of Queen Lostris. Taita has withdrawn from court, but the ambitions of Lord Naja threaten Prince Nefer and the political settlement created by the previous generation. The novel returns to a divided Nile valley in which rival courts, military commanders and priestly authority compete for control after a weak succession.

Taita returns as adviser, magician and military strategist to protect the legitimate heir. The conflict combines civil war, royal succession and supernatural elements within a fictionalised Egypt still shaped by division and the legacy of Hyksos power. Its supernatural elements are prominent, but the central conflict remains a struggle over guardianship, dynastic continuity and the reunification of a fractured kingdom.
