James R. Benn is an American author best known for historical mysteries set during the Second World War. Before becoming a full-time writer in 2011, he worked for more than thirty-five years in library and information-technology roles. His novels draw on detailed research into military operations, intelligence work and wartime politics, often placing fictional investigations within documented campaigns and introducing historical figures alongside invented characters.

Benn’s principal work is the Billy Boyle World War II Mysteries series, beginning with Billy Boyle. Its protagonist is a young Irish-American police officer from Boston who joins the United States Army and becomes an investigator attached to the Allied high command, serving under his distant relative Dwight D. Eisenhower.
