In 1964, tavern owner Clay Brock is trying to protect his wife and son while concealing what happened to him and his friend Jake Burnett during the freezing winter campaign in the Ardennes. A threat to his family forces Clay to confront the secret he carried home from the war and the memory of the man who never truly left him.
The narrative moves between Clay’s Depression-era youth, combat during the Battle of the Bulge, his postwar family life and his old age at the beginning of a new century. As past and present close around him, the novel examines comradeship, guilt, identity and the long emotional afterlife of military service.
