Historical person
1902–1983
Meyer Lansky was an American organised-crime figure and gambling entrepreneur whose networks extended from Prohibition-era rackets to casinos in the United States and Cuba. He was associated with major organised-crime groups and became particularly influential in gambling ventures before the Cuban Revolution.
Meyer Lansky was born in Grodno, Russian Empire and died in Miami, Florida. Lansky worked closely with figures such as Lucky Luciano and invested heavily in gambling operations, including pre-revolutionary Cuba; despite his reputation as a financial organiser of organised crime, major federal prosecutions late in his life achieved limited results.
In Philip Kerr’s Field Grey, 'One of the greatest anti-heroes ever written' LEE CHILDIt's 1954 and Bernie has tired of his increasingly dangerous work spying on Meyer Lansky for Cuban Intelligence. He secretly buys a boat and sails to Florida, where he's arrested, sent back to Cuba and imprisoned in the Isle of Pines. In James R. Benn’s The Ninth Circle, Their inquiry moves through Chinatown, casinos and political networks until gangster Meyer Lansky points them towards the Sicherheitsdienst, raising the possibility that German intelligence is protecting a final wartime secret in Cuba.
