In 1954 Bernie Gunther is working in Cuba and spying on Meyer Lansky for Cuban intelligence when he decides the job has become too dangerous. His attempt to escape by boat ends with arrest, imprisonment on the Isle of Pines and interrogation by a French intelligence officer who offers him a stark choice: cooperate or face a murder charge.
Bernie is sent back to Europe to identify Edgard de Boudel, a French collaborator who served in the Waffen-SS and has been hiding among returning prisoners of war. The assignment forces him through another network of post-war intelligence services, concealed identities and compromised loyalties, while his own history as a German prisoner in the Soviet Union begins to catch up with him.
