German Requiem
Post-war Vienna is divided among the Allied powers when Bernie Gunther is asked to help an old Kripo colleague accused of murdering an American officer. The city may no longer be under Nazi rule, but occupation authorities, Soviet security services and former Nazis have created a new landscape in which disappearance, blackmail and political pressure remain common.
Bernie discovers that the accused man had connections with a clandestine group hunting war criminals who escaped punishment by faking their deaths or assuming new identities. His investigation brings him face to face with people from his own past and forces him to decide how justice can be pursued when every occupying power has its own interests. The case turns the ruins of Vienna into an extension of the unresolved crimes of the Third Reich.
