France, 1956. Bernie Gunther refuses an assignment from an East German intelligence officer and immediately becomes a hunted man. As he tries to cross Europe towards safety in West Berlin, the pursuit forces him to remember an earlier case from 1939, when he was ordered to investigate a murder at Hitler’s mountain retreat above Berchtesgaden.
The two timelines connect the surviving machinery of Nazi power with the new intelligence struggles of the Cold War. In 1939 Bernie must work among officials who are anxious to protect Hitler from scandal while uncovering what happened at the Berghof. In 1956 the men and secrets of that world have not disappeared; they have been redistributed between rival states and security services. The novel uses Bernie’s flight to show how compromised loyalties and unfinished crimes survive regime change.
