Munich, 1949. Bernie Gunther is working as a private investigator in a Germany crowded with displaced people, former Nazis, black-market operators and fugitives trying to reinvent themselves. His cases often involve tracing stolen property or cleaning up wartime histories for clients who would rather their pasts remained hidden.
A woman asks Bernie to establish whether her missing husband is dead. The man was a concentration-camp commandant wanted for war crimes, and the search draws Bernie into the networks helping Nazis escape Europe. Moving through the compromised institutions of post-war Germany, he discovers how difficult it is to separate victims, opportunists and perpetrators when almost everyone has something to conceal.
