Buenos Aires, 1950. Bernie Gunther has escaped post-war Europe only to discover that Argentina’s apparent refuge is crowded with former Nazis, collaborators and officials willing to protect them. When a girl is murdered in circumstances that resemble an unsolved case from his years as a Berlin homicide detective, the local police recruit him to help.
The investigation moves between Perón-era Argentina and Gunther’s memories of Berlin in the early 1930s, when political violence was already reshaping police work. The mirrored cases force him to revisit an old failure while tracing the networks that allowed men implicated in the Third Reich to build new lives in South America.
