In 1944, Harry Curtis is selected for an apparent suicide mission to kill Adolf Hitler. The operation collapses inside Germany, leaving him wounded and dependent on Jutta, a local woman who hides and nurses him before disappearing. Curtis survives the war, marries an aristocratic heiress and builds a distinguished army career, but domestic respectability cannot replace the intensity of clandestine service.
A postwar appointment takes him to Malaya, where communist insurgency has turned the plantation country into another battlefield. There he encounters Jutta again and becomes entangled in a killing that attracts international attention. The final volume shows how identities and relationships formed during the war continue to govern Curtis’s choices long after victory, placing his marriage, reputation and command at risk.
