The Bear Slayer
Four years after his banishment, Ulf Bear-Slayer attempts to abandon warfare and build a life as a trader. When old alliances and unfinished obligations place those around him in danger, Ulf must again rely on the skills that made his name. The story explores whether a warrior shaped by vengeance can escape the identity others have imposed upon him.
Ulf’s attempt to become a trader reflects the permeability between raiding, commerce and settlement in the Viking world. The same ships, routes and personal networks can support peaceful exchange or violence depending on circumstance. His reputation therefore has economic consequences as well as martial ones, making it difficult to create a new identity when potential partners remember the warrior before the merchant.
