In 636, Beobrand is sent south to escort churchmen carrying sacred relics, delaying the blood feud he is determined to settle. When Penda of Mercia leads an army into the southern kingdoms, the mission becomes entangled in war. Amid battle and political betrayal, Beobrand must decide how much honour, loyalty and life he is prepared to sacrifice for vengeance.
The relic escort places Beobrand between the expanding influence of the Church and the older warrior obligations that govern his private feud. Penda’s intervention turns that tension into a military crisis. Each choice forces Beobrand to decide whether vengeance is worth endangering men who trust him, making the novel as much about command and restraint as about battle.
