Their survival brings them into a warrior society where loyalty must be earned and defeat can erase an entire community. As Urien campaigns against neighbouring Saxon powers, the young survivors learn to fight and discover how personal revenge differs from the larger struggle to preserve territory and political independence. The novel places its fictional warriors within the fragmented world of post-Roman Britain, where British and Anglo-Saxon kingdoms competed for control long before England existed as a single state.
