The Last Crusaders: The Great Siege
Set in 1565, this novel centres on the Ottoman siege of Malta and the defence mounted by the Knights Hospitaller and the island’s inhabitants. The small fortified island becomes a battleground between Ottoman imperial power and the Christian military order that controls a key position in the central Mediterranean. The story follows soldiers, knights, slaves and civilians as siege warfare turns Malta into a test of endurance, command and survival.
The siege depends on geography as much as courage. Forts controlling the Grand Harbour allow the Hospitallers to delay a much larger Ottoman force, while relief from Sicily remains uncertain. The novel places personal endurance inside a strategic contest over whether Malta can remain a Christian naval base capable of interfering with Ottoman movement across the Mediterranean.
