The Shadow of the Vulture
The Shadow of the Vulture is set during the first Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1529 and features Red Sonya of Rogatino, the literary precursor of the later comic-book heroine Red Sonja. Howard uses the battered walls, artillery pressure and looming standards of Suleiman’s army to create a high-energy siege narrative in which heroic resistance and urban desperation go hand in hand.
The Ottoman-Habsburg conflict is central rather than decorative, and Suleiman the Magnificent provides a strong historical anchor for the fictional action.
