Charles George Gordon

1833–1885

Charles George Gordon, often called Gordon of Khartoum, was a British army officer associated with imperial campaigns in China, Egypt and Sudan. His death during the fall of Khartoum in 1885 became a major event in Victorian imperial memory.

In Wilbur Smith’s The Triumph of the Sun, Khartoum is surrounded by the forces of Muhammad Ahmad, the Mahdi, as General Charles Gordon attempts to hold the city for the Egyptian government. Griff Hosker’s Soldier of the Queen places Charles George Gordon within a narrative shaped by court politics and dynastic power, military command and battlefield decision-making, and family, marriage and personal loyalty. Other novels featuring Charles George Gordon include Griff Hosker’s An Officer and a Gentleman, Griff Hosker’s Desert War, Griff Hosker’s For King and Country, Griff Hosker’s Omdurman, and Griff Hosker’s Redcoat’s Rifle.
