Marcus Aemilius Lepidus survives Caesar’s assassination by making himself useful to stronger and more celebrated men. He helps reconcile Mark Antony and the young Octavian, then becomes the third member of the triumvirate that legalises their power, finances war through confiscation and destroys opponents through proscription.

Lepidus sees the defeat of Brutus and Cassius, the rivalry between his colleagues and the continuing resistance of Sextus Pompey, but his formal equality hides diminishing influence. As Octavian learns to monopolise authority, Lepidus’s belief in his own indispensability leads him toward the confrontation that removes him from active power.
