The Road to War
First published 2019
Rome, 42 BC. Antony and Octavian control the city through the Triumvirate and its proscriptions, but Brutus and Cassius hold fleets, provinces and armies in the East. Antony sends Artemidorus to Alexandria with a request for naval support from Cleopatra. The journey crosses districts stripped by the Liberators’ tax collectors and cities where allegiance changes according to whichever army is nearest.
Cleopatra cannot aid Antony while Cassius threatens Egypt and grain shortages endanger her rule. Artemidorus must help prevent invasion and restore supplies before popular unrest turns against the queen. Friends, lovers and political partners become potential traitors as the spy’s mission prepares the coalition that will confront the Liberators in Macedonia.
