The Blood of Gods

by Conn Iggulden Book 5 in the Emperor series.

First published 2013

4.5(4,556)

Julius Caesar’s assassination leaves Rome without a settled government and turns his name into a weapon claimed by friends, enemies and heirs. The young Octavian joins forces uneasily with Mark Antony to pursue Brutus and Cassius, while the assassins gather an army in the east. Political vengeance becomes open civil war, culminating at Philippi in the destruction of the principal military opposition to Caesar’s successors.

Octavian’s position is especially precarious because legal adoption gives him Caesar’s name without automatically giving him Caesar’s authority. Antony, the Senate and the liberators all underestimate how effectively he can convert inheritance into political support. The novel follows the formation of the Second Triumvirate and the violent transition from republican rivalry toward one-man rule.
