The Roman world, 49–44 BCE. When Julius Caesar crosses the Rubicon, Mark Antony becomes one of his principal political and military supporters. Civil war carries them from Italy to the confrontation with Pompey at Pharsalus and then into the dangerous succession struggle of Ptolemaic Alexandria.

Further victories in Africa and at Munda leave Caesar without a military rival, while Antony’s own authority and private life become harder to reconcile with the dictator’s expectations. The novel follows the transformation of an alliance forged in war as Caesar’s accumulation of power creates the conditions for assassination.
