Rome

by Ben Kane

4.1(509)

In AD 410, twenty-year-old Galla Placidia lives at the court of her half-brother, Emperor Honorius, but has little control over the decisions shaping the Western Roman Empire. Her efforts to gain influence are overtaken when Alaric and his Visigoth army besiege Rome and finally break into the city.

Galla is taken hostage and carried away from Italy with the Visigoths. As she learns to survive among the people Rome calls barbarians, she forms a relationship with their king, Ataulf, and marries him. Death, war and shifting alliances repeatedly overturn her position, but she continues to pursue a return to imperial power. Her journey takes her from captive princess to the centre of the western court, where she must secure her own future and that of her son.
