AD 666. Fidelma joins pilgrims sailing from Ireland towards the shrine of St James in Iberia, expecting a temporary withdrawal from court and legal duties. On the first night at sea, one passenger disappears. The others assume an accident, but inconsistent testimony and signs of concealed conflict persuade Fidelma that the pilgrim may have been murdered.

Confined aboard the vessel, she must investigate people travelling under religious vows while storms, fear and limited space make every discovery more dangerous. Further violence reveals that the voyage is being used to settle an old grievance, and Fidelma must identify the killer before the ship reaches its destination—or claims another victim.
