In AD 406, Marcus Flavius Victor leaves a fractured Britannia with a small group of loyal warriors. Their route crosses the pirate-threatened Mare Germanicum and Saxonia as they seek General Stilicho, the one Roman commander Marcus believes may still offer protection and a coherent defence of the western empire.
Stilicho’s influence with Emperor Honorius is failing just as Radagaisus leads a large Gothic force towards Italy. Marcus and his companions become entangled in the struggle while carrying a secret capable of altering the balance between court, army and invaders. The journey is also shadowed by a son who wants Marcus dead, making the collapse of public authority inseparable from a private conflict he can no longer avoid.
