The Wall

In AD 400, veteran cavalry commander Marcus Flavius Victor begins what appears to be a final inspection of the forts along Hadrian’s Wall. For twenty years he has used discipline, bribery and force to hold together poorly paid garrisons while Roman authority in Britain weakens and pressure from northern enemies increases.

Marcus is quietly removing cavalry from the forts and concentrating the riders under his own command, prompting rumours that he intends either rebellion or an alliance with the Picts. As he travels through Segedunum, Cilurnum, Brocolitia and Vindolanda, old friendships and rivalries reveal competing plans for the province, while an unseen observer follows a mission whose true purpose may determine whether the frontier survives Rome’s withdrawal.
