Britain, AD 61. After the Roman victory at Watling Street, the province remains unstable and the surviving leaders of the revolt are hunted. Macro and Cato are ordered to recover a lost legionary eagle and pursue those still capable of renewing resistance. The campaign moves from open battle to retaliation and political settlement, forcing the soldiers to confront the difference between defeating an army and restoring a province devastated by both rebellion and Roman revenge.
The lost eagle gives the pursuit a symbolic importance beyond the fate of one unit. Legionary standards embody honour, continuity and imperial authority, so leaving one in rebel hands would advertise Roman weakness after the devastation of Boudica's rising. Macro and Cato's mission therefore joins military recovery with the political need to demonstrate that the province has returned to Roman control.
