Henry Wilmot, 1st Earl of Rochester

Henry Wilmot, 1st Earl of Rochester, was a Royalist cavalry commander during the English Civil Wars and a close associate of Charles II. After the defeat at Worcester in 1651, Wilmot shared the king’s dangerous escape across England and helped organise hiding places and transport. He followed Charles into exile and undertook diplomatic and military missions for the royalist cause. He died in 1658, two years before the Restoration.

Wilmot appears in Robert Harris’s Act of Oblivion and in other novels about Charles II’s escape and the pursuit of royalists after Worcester. Fiction often uses him as the professional soldier and practical companion beside the disguised king. His death before the Restoration adds an element of lost reward to a life spent preserving a cause that eventually succeeded.

Georgette Heyer’s Royal Escape is set after defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The future Charles II must cross a country controlled by the Commonwealth while Parliament’s forces search for him.
