Tudors follows England from the accession of Henry VIII through the reigns of Edward VI and Mary I to the death of Elizabeth I. It recounts Henry’s marriages and the succession crisis, the break with Rome, the dissolution of the monasteries, the Protestant reforms imposed under Edward and Mary’s attempt to restore Catholic worship before Elizabeth established a more durable religious settlement.

The volume treats the Reformation as a transformation of government and society as well as doctrine. Court politics, rebellion, persecution, overseas rivalry and the Spanish Armada are placed beside changes in education, household religion and the authority of the crown, showing how a largely Catholic kingdom became an increasingly Protestant state.
