Elizabethan England. Elizabeth “Bess” Throckmorton grows from a court-connected girl into one of Elizabeth I’s attendants and falls in love with Walter Raleigh, whose ambitions encompass navigation, colonisation, royal favour and personal glory. Their secret marriage violates the queen’s expectations and sends both to the Tower, beginning a partnership repeatedly strained by Raleigh’s dependence on court politics and distant ventures.

Bess sustains their household through expeditions, imprisonment, changing monarchs and the loss of their son. Raleigh’s bright vision of overseas empire gives the novel its scale, but the story remains centred on the woman required to live with its consequences. Historical events including the Armada, the Roanoke enterprise and Jacobean suspicion are viewed through marriage, endurance and the unequal freedoms available to the couple.
