Fulvia

c. 83/77–40 BCE

Fulvia married three prominent popularis politicians, including Mark Antony, and became unusually visible in the conflicts following Julius Caesar’s assassination. She supported Antony’s interests in Italy, participated in the political struggle surrounding the proscriptions and was associated with the Perusine War against Octavian.

Her marriage brings domestic loyalty, political ambition and the costs of civil war into the story of the triumvirate. Fulvia was a politically active Roman noblewoman and the wife of Mark Antony during the formation of the Second Triumvirate.

In Alex Gough’s Caesar’s Avenger, The novel presents the avenging of Caesar as a process that destroys legal restraint, drawing Cicero, Fulvia and the families of the condemned into the personal cost of triumviral power.
