In a fifth-century Britain abandoned by Rome, the murder of Uthur leaves rival kingdoms competing to choose a new High King. Arthur, a young Dumnonian cavalryman, travels with warriors, his mother Igraine and his half-sister Morgan through a landscape divided by dynastic ambition. Saxon refugees are crossing the sea as rising waters destroy their homelands, adding migration and war to the struggle among the British rulers.

Beyond the Wall, Nimue has awakened the dragon Cythraul and the monstrous Wormkind threaten every human kingdom. Arthur’s alliance with Merlin and the warriors who will become associated with the Round Table offers the possibility of unity, but only if he survives the rival claims surrounding Camelot, Excalibur and his own family. The novel is deliberately low historical fantasy rather than a reconstruction of a documented Arthur.
